DP World has signed a Dh1.85 billion ($503.7 million) contract with Jan de Nul Dredging Limited, a major European company, to carry out dredging and reclamation works for Stage 1 of the Jebel Ali New Container Terminal.The contract was signed between Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayam, chairman of DP World and Jafza, and Jan Kop, project director of Jan de Nul.
DP World, a new entity formed following the merger of Dubai Ports Authority and Dubai Ports International, is implementing an expansion of Jebel Ali Port by building new facilities to supplement the cargo handling capacity of the ports at Jebel Ali and Dubai, in order to cope with the projected trade growth and to absorb new cargo flows.
The construction of Stage 1 of the new terminal is divided into five phases. The contract for the first phase – MCC2 – has already been awarded, with the construction of the quay wall having commenced. The contract agreement signed with Jan de Nul forms the second phase, MCC3 which consist of such activities as dredging works, construction of a 9-km-long rubble-mound breakwaters and revetments involving a total rock quantity of 2.5 million cu m, construction of floating pontoons at the eastern side of the new quay wall to provide a safe berthing of vessels, and providing navigation aids required for Stage 1 of the New Container Terminal.
